Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory off the coast of the United States of America in the North Atlantic Ocean. Bermuda consists of a number of islands of which Bermuda, Saint George, Saint David and Somerset are the largest. Hamilton is the capital of this overseas territory. Bermuda was discovered at the beginning of the 16th century by the Spanish who gave the islands the nickname Isle of Devils. This is also why it took more than 100 years before the British colonized the islands. Bermuda is the oldest overseas territory under British rule. Bermuda is not fertile; only 20 percent of the island is suitable for cultivation. The main sources of income are tourism and banking. Because of the favorable tax system many multinationals have their headquarters here. Bermuda is one of the richest countries in the world, the per capita income is very high. The weather in Bermuda
Bermuda has a warm Mediterranean climate influenced by the North Atlantic Ocean. Because a warm Gulf Stream passes by the islands it is warmer here than you may expect. Average temperatures are also high because of westerly winds. The temperature of the sea hardly ever drops below 20 degrees Celsius (68.0 degrees Fahrenheit). During the second part of the year there is a risk of tropical storms and hurricanes. During the winter temperatures may drop because of a northerly wind that supplies cold air from the polar regions.
