Montserrat sunindex: the best time to travel to Montserrat
Montserrat is a British overseas Territory in the Caribbean Sea. The island is part of the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles. The island was discovered at the end of the 15th century by Columbus who named it after a Spanish mountain.

In July 1995, Montserrat's Soufrière Hills volcano, dormant for centuries, erupted and soon buried the island's capital, Plymouth, in more than 12 metres (39 ft) of mud, destroyed its airport and docking facilities, and rendered the southern part of the island (the "exclusion zone") uninhabitable and not safe for travel. The southern part of the island was spared. Nowadays the airport is situated here.

Until the new airport was operable you had to fly to Antigua and take a boat from that island in order to reach Montserrat. Half of the people who fled during the eruption never returned to Montserrat. Because of this only 5,000 people inhabit the island nowadays. The main source of income is tourism. Montserrat is an ideal winter sun destination with beautiful beaches. The seas here are ideal for snorkeling and diving.
