Saint Barthélemy sunindex: the best time to travel to Saint Barthélemy
The Territorial collectivity of Saint Barthelemy is an overseas collectivity of France and is located in the Caribbean. Saint Barthelemy is part of the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles. The island was discovered in the 15th century by Columbus. The island was colonized by France in the 17th century who later on sold it to Malta. During the 18th century it became a colony of France again who traded it with Sweden. This explains the name of the capital Gustavia and the reference to Sweden in their flag. After WWII France bought the island back and it became part of Guadeloupe. In 2007 the population of Saint Bathelemy voted for autonomy via a referendum. Over the past few years the island has become increasingly popular among rich Americans, pop stars and actors. This is mainly because of its remote location and pleasant climate. During the busiest months of the year, December and January the beaches are crowded with ordinary tourists. During the rest of the year the island belongs to the jet set. Real mass tourism will not occur soon here because of high prices and because the island is too small for large charter flights. The island can only be reached by boat or small plane. The island is an ideal winter sun destination for the well-to-do. Saint Barthelemy is often used as a stop-over by people who are sailing in the Caribbean.
